The Dallas Cowboys are apparently entering the Cooper Kupp sweepstakes.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the Cowboys are “making a push” to sign the free agent wide receiver, although they are not considered the likely landing spot.
The Los Angeles Rams decided to move on from the former Super Bowl MVP this off-season and informed Kupp they were seeking a trade. Rams reporter Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic suggested the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs or Denver Broncos as possible landing spots for the former triple crown receiver.
When a trade could not be arranged, the Rams released him before the start of the new league year Wednesday.
The Rams have since found Kupp’s successor, signing receiver Davante Adams to a two-year, $46-million contract.
Kupp, who will be 32 when the season starts, had three consecutive seasons with more than 90 catches leading up to his standout 2021 campaign, leading the league in catches (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16). He also caught two touchdown passes, including the game winner, to help the Rams defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI to earn MVP honours.
But Kupp hasn’t made more than 75 catches or 812 yards receiving in a season since then nor has he played more than 12 games in a single year due to injuries.
Dallas’ high interest in Kupp follows the reported signing of another recently released Pro Bowler in running back Miles Sanders. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Sanders agreed to join the Cowboys on a one-year contract.
