Angelo Que completed one of the most remarkable comebacks in writing PGT history on Thursday, and his victory in the ICTSI Eagle Ridge Championship that made him the first player to win the first two legs of the circuit gives him all the confidence boost for a tougher grind ahead.
But being red-hot still won’t change his plans for the year.
“I feel like this validated my feeling that I am ready,” the 46-year-old Que told the Inquirer after a final round two-under-par 70 at the Faldo layout in Trece Martirez, Cavite, that had him charging back from five strokes down for a two-shot win over Guido van der Valk of The Netherlands.
He was referring to a stint in the International Series Macau next week where he will be facing players from a different stratosphere, with some Asian Tour and LIV Golf stars taking part.
“It’s a different fight, but this win gives me all the belief [in myself] that I need,” he went on after tallying 293 over the windswept layout. “I have pushed myself hard the past two tournaments, although this [win] still doesn’t change my outlook for the rest of the year.”
‘Daddy duties’
Van der Valk assembled a 74, while Clyde Mondilla matched Que’s 70—they were the only two players to break par on the final day—to finish third another stroke back.
LJ Go carved out a 74 and tallied 297, with Sean Ramos ballooning to a 79 for 301.
Que said that he won’t change the way he has been preparing for tournaments of late, putting “daddy duties” first before golf.
“It’s better if I stick to the original plan of doing my duties to [my] family first,” he said with a laugh. “Winning two [events] doesn’t change that. I’d like to take it slow nowadays.”
There was no player in the field who broke par more than once, and Que’s 35-35 came at the perfect time as Van der Valk sputtered with three of his five bogeys in the back nine.
“To beat him, I had to play really well,” Que said. “Unfortunately for him, he made some late bogeys, but we were head-to-head from start to finish.”
